The steady increase of internet throughout the nation of Cuba has been making strides leading to a shift of access to media, news, and information over the past several years. There is still more work to be done, however.
The high expense of data has created limitations despite the access of internet becoming widespread. There is also a “struggle against the US embargo on the one hand and the Cuban government media monopoly on the other,” Ted A. Henken writes in the Social Research Journal.
Henken’s article explores how, “in recent years [Cubans have] formed a rich variety of independent digital news, information, and entertainment projects, contributing to the expansion of the public sphere on the island.”
As a student with no background in journalism, it has been interesting to learn how the rise of independent thought has been affecting free press and speech in Cuba. All these factors have ultimately led to different narratives, regarding Cuba and the events within this country. These groups may include the United States government, Cuban Americans, the Cuban government, Cuban citizens, United States citizens such as myself, and more.
This has brought to light that there are many perspectives that must be taken into consideration. But it has also made me question, which is the right narrative? What is the truth in this ever-conflicting social dynamic? Is there even a correct narrative?
Cristina Escobar, a well-renowned local and international journalist, explains, “There is no such thing as apolitical. Everyone has a bias.” There will always be different ideas and narratives present in our world.
Escobar goes on to say, “It is about finding the middle group between black and white. To find the truth is what activism and engagement is about. Therefore, we must have accountability and be straight forward as journalists.”
